As a former Londoner I am always amazed by the complaints I hear of the high price of visiting my hometown. So, here are some hints on how to survive, see the sights, and most of all, enjoy one of the greatest cities in the world without breaking the bank.Travel Passes/Oyster Cards and Public Transport Without over stating the case, London has one of the most comprehensive, efficient and reliable public transport systems you could care to use. The locals use Oyster Cards, moneys deposited and as the card is used the most economic fare for the day calculated and deducted every day. Probably more than the average tourist needs, but the Off-Peak Daily Travel Passes (1 or 3 day), for use after 9.30am (and believe me, you want to avoid the rush hour) are real bargains. Buy them from any Tube Station. London Transports online journey planner can advise you on how to get to all the hot spots.Visit the Museums and Galleries Something for everyone. The National Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery and The Tate Modern for the art lovers. Visit the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum. My particular favourite are the mummies at the British Museum, while there take a stroll through the Paul Hamlyn Library where Dickens, Darwin and Thackery honed their skills. Visit the highly controversial Elgin Marbles, stolen from the Parthenon some years ago. Except for the special exhibitions entry is FREE, guided tours are FREE and audio tours can be obtained for a nominal fee.Wander and Wonder Guided walking tours are a cheap ($10) way of seeing parts of London youd never unearth by yourself. Excellent guides cover a multitude of themed walks - just pack comfortable shoes and a good attitude. When you get a feel for the city, do it yourself, wander down allies, along the river, cross bridges - you are never far from a pub to get the ubiquitous pie and a pint or a tube station to get you home.Well worth the Price Take an open top double decker bus tour, such as The Original Tour or The Big Bus Tour - no it isnt always raining - for roughly $30 you can see the sights from up high! Often a river cruise is part of the cost - if not take a trip up to the Thames Barrier - the cruises are often narrated by those who once made their living on the river, and yes, listen carefully, they are actually speaking English! And Eat in the pubs; the food is good, filling and reasonable. Do not leave London before sampling some Indian Food, which for some time has been a national favourite. Indian Restaurants are quickly becoming as prevalent as pubs, once again the food is fabulous and generally inexpensive. Visit the markets: Portobello on Saturday, Camden Market on Sunday - and Harrods - any day of the week (just look, dont buy - the old adage of if you need to ask the price you cant afford it - counts 100 fold there!).Finally Enjoy!
