Ecology became a hot topic with global warning. How lingerie can be related to ecology? Well, its not as simple as just using bio cotton or recycled materials for garments. The lingerie industry is a mammoth :15 billion pieces /year sold in the USA, 400 million/ year in UK. Out of these sample figures, 60% new bras sold are to replace an old garment. What happen to these billion of old garments ? Certainly not recycled into charity storesIt takes more than 40 pieces to make a bra, much more than for any sportwear clothing. All these pieces are manufactured around the world, with more or less concerns about environment Theses bits and pieces have a lot of millage before being assembled together. The main fabrics used for garments are polyester, polyamide, lycra and cotton : all dyed with chemical colors leaving behind heavily contaminated waters. Are you sure these waters are treated before released in the sea, rivers or lakes ?Thinking that lingerie are small beautiful pieces and therefore cannot be harmful for the environment is wrong : one single collection can use as much as 1,000,000yards of lace during its life span ! Lingerie is delicate, elegant, but business behind is carried as usual. So far, only price driven market have given the direction on how and where to make garments. Lingerie s fabric dyed chemicals can be very harmful for the consumers : new laws just banned colors that were on the markets for yearssuspected now to cause cancer. The main thing about intimates is that they are directly in contact with the skin all day long and this every single day of the year. The fabrics are usually made from cotton, or polyester. In both case, heavy chimical are used either to color the fabrics, or as a softener. In view of the recent events with toys with dangerous paints for kids, the industry slowly wakes up that maybe one day, they might get into troubles. The main problem being that the fabrics used for the garments are made somewhere deep in the far east. Of course, regulations and laws are supposed to regulate and control all substances used in the garment. Brands implement quality procedures to control the fabric sourcing. On the paper, all clear. I worked for 15 years in the lingerie industry. I can tell you that regardless the procedures, short cuts are all too common. A short cut is: a bras lace is approved for a collectionbut another one is delivered for production. Of course, it is a cheaper one and the caracteristics of this new fabric are all but definedThis game would be rather funnyif not the issue of the fabrics and colors leading in skin cancers for usersThe best way to keep safe with garments is to buy quality branded bra. European brands are a safer bet as the garments are manufactured just next door, in Tunisia or Marocco, not at the scale of far east manufacturing where all can happened. Of course, it cost more than the first bra on the corner. But are you ready to put at stake your life for a couple of dollars ? Transfat used to be safe, cigarettes used to be safe, alcohol used to be safe, and much more. The more we learn about the goods we use every day, the less it seams to be safe!
